News Release from "Hire a Refugee" organization
Dr. Jon Gerrard Taking Action Against Racism in Manitoba
September 15, 2017 – Winnipeg, M.B., After many calls for help from a local refugee group, one provincial party candidate has taken action. Dr. Jon Gerrard has written letters to the Manitoba Human Rights Commission as well as Justice Minister Heather Stefanson about the rising tide of racism in Manitoba.
“My heart really sunk when I discovered what was happening with this group, with Hire A Refugee,” says Gerrard. “Manitoba is a place where all families deserve a chance to make it. In these circumstances, we have a group offering to help individuals who fled war, who may have language difficulties, to find work, and some Manitobans have decided they don’t like this.”
Gerrard is referring to the inundation of racist comments Hire A Refugee receives on their social media posts. Gerrard is the sole provincial party candidate to take real action against the racism recently affecting our province.
“After the Canada Day Nazi video surfaced, it became almost impossible to deny there is an issue here that needs to be addressed. Manitobans are mostly good people and we need to be more vocal about not letting this type of thing go.”
Gerrard has sent the letters and is hoping for a prompt response from both the minister and commission. He says once he hears from them he can better continue his campaign in the province and will ensure that no families should have to suffer the indignity of racism.

Why is a dedicated stroke unit not mentioned? Has Pallister's government forgotten this critical need?

Dr. Jon Gerrard - MLA, River Heights has raised a valid point, something that already has, or could affect any of us at any time. I've certainly seen it enough times to recognize the importance of having a dedicated stroke unit.

The PC government's health care cuts are creating chaos and concern for patient care right across the province.

Brian Pallister has not changed his ways since he was the Finance minister under Garry Filmon. This time instead of using cuts to nurses and bed closures he has the dictated the regional health authorities to do his bidding, which by the way, were also created during Filmon/Pallister regime in 1996. The appointees to the director positions of the various RHA's were PC party faithful. Closures of medical department facilities, especially ER's will put all Manitobans at risk. The increased time that ambulances will now have to travel to reach one of the remaining three ER facilities with a heart attack patient will have a direct impact on that patient's survivability chances. If you are lucky enough to live near a remaining ER, good for you. For those living in Charleswood or anywhere in rural Manitoba, I guess they are out of luck! In the case of Urgent Care facility the Pallister PC's sound vaguely Trump-like to me. We have a plan to replace healthcare; We don't actually have a plan but when we do, it will be "Great!"; We don't have a plan, but we are going to abolish the existing plan and then create an new plan, which will probably be the next phrase coming from the Team Pallister/Goertzen. We all know how well our Premier does when it comes to meeting deadlines, (especially those deadlines that are not set by him) NOT! A particular phrase comes to my mind regarding the current state of our provincial government, Send in the clowns, don't bother, we elected them last year.

Again? This Politicing & Headlining. It's been going on for years and nothing is being done to change the EIA system.  What needs to be done to effectively change this system is a huge change in staffing and and revamping of employment prograns for older workers - more cooperation to get older people trained and back to work. All this talk about those who want to join the MIDDLE CLASS. Where's the incentive for those in poverty. We want job training and jobs. Just because we are older and with a disability doesn't mean we have to live a life of poverty which has been the case for far too long. Mr Trudeau put your money where your mouth is! Nowadays immigrants will be getting the money. Yet for those who have struggled to return to work will get no more that what they have received on the past. I hate to be pessimistic but job creation for people in poverty is not a priority especially for okder persons with disabilities.

Isn't this doubling taxing in a way - I recycle my newspaper as do probably everyone else. I pay for that privilege too through my Water and Waste monthly bill. I am taxed on my income so what I pay for my newspaper and my Waste.

The further the Ambulance has to travel the more it is going to cost the patient/taxpayer! More money in the pockets for Regional Health Authorities...spend it wisely!!!!!
